More good news about cancer and vitamin D.

A lot of studies have been published in the last few years that emphasize the importance of adequate vitamin D intake.

The following study assessed the association of blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and post-menopausal breast cancer risk (Abbas S, et al. 2007.) 25-hydroxyvitamin D is a blood test used to check vitamin D status.

Included in the study were 1394 patients with breast cancer aged 50-74 years and 1365 co ntrols without cancer. The researchers found that the co ncentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D was significantly inversely associated with post-menopausal breast cancer risk. They co ncluded that their findings strongly suggested a protective effect for post-menopausal breast cancer through a better vitamin D supply.

It is also interesting that numerous observational studies have shown that supplemental calcium and vitamin D reduce the risk of co mmon cancers. This was also investigated in a four year double-blind, randomized placebo- co ntrolled trial including 1179 women over 55 years (Lappe JM, et al, 2007). These women were given 1100 IU of vitamin D3 daily and 1400-1500 mg of calcium daily.

The results documented that the incidence of cancer was lower in the treatment group than the co ntrol group and it was co ncluded that improving calcium and vitamin D nutritional status substantially reduced all cancer risk in postmenopausal women.

We can utilize between 1200-1500 mg of calcium daily, but that is from both dietary and supplemental sources together. For that reason it may not be neccessary to supplement with 1400-1500 mg of calcium daily. It is also better to take calcium together with magnesium since these two minerals affect each other and magnesium is important for many reasons.

The BMJ formula is a good source of easy absorbable calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, and also other important nutrients. For more information on the BMJ, and to order log on to www.tissuerecovery.com or call 1-800-883-1252

Wishing you the best of health,
