Metabolic Syndrome Precursor to Diabetes, Magnesium May Help

People who have the metabolic syndrome experience a cluster of symptoms. They are insulin resistant and often have high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (low density lipoprotein) the bad cholesterol and decreased HDL (high density lipoprotein) the good cholesterol.

Getting enough of a common mineral like magnesium may be one of the things that can lower the risk for this condition.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention examined the association between dietary intake of magnesium and the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome using data from 7669 participants (Ford ES, et al, 2007). The results were similar for both men and women and showed an inverse association between dietary magnesium intake and the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome. The researchers stated that this added to the evidence that adequate magnesium intake or a diet rich in magnesium may be important for maintaining good cardio metabolic health.

Another study involving 4637 participants aged 18 to 30 years examined the same relationship between magnesium and the metabolic syndrome (He K., et al, 2006). The result was also the same and the investigators concluded that their findings suggest that young adults with higher magnesium intake have lower risk of developing the metabolic syndrome.

The metabolic syndrome is raising the risk for several serious conditions cardiovascular disease and diabetes being two of them.

If a simple thing as taking extra magnesium will reduce the risk for these serious conditions it is certainly worth the effort.

Magnesium is also important for other reasons, it is even involved in the energy metabolism.

The most common form of magnesium is magnesium oxide which is very cheap, but not well absorbed. In higher doses it may also cause diarrhea. The best absorbable form of magnesium is a patented amino acid chelate.

An easy way to get adequate magnesium is by taking the BMJ formula which contains magnesium in addition to other minerals as patented amino acid chelates. This formula will also support all of the musculoskeletal tissue in your body including your bones. Log on to www.tissuerecovery.com or call 1-800-883-1252 for more information and to order.
