How to keep a slim waist line Most people would like to have a small waist, but even if it goes down when they diet keeping it small seems to be difficult for many people. Accumulation of fat around the waist is associated with increased cardiovascular risk among other things so there are good health reasons to have a small waist line. In a large recent study, the researchers looked at the relationship between the Mediterranean dietary patterns and body fat, measuring waist circumference and body mass index in 497,308 individuals from 10 European co untries (Romaguera D., et al. 2009.) The degree of adherence to the modified-Mediterranean diet s co re included high co nsumption of vegetables, legumes, fruits and nuts, cereal, fish and seafood and unsaturated fatty acids ratio, moderate al co hol intake and low co nsumption of meat products and dairy products. The researchers co ncluded that the results of the study suggested that adherence to a modified Mediterranean diet, high in foods of vegetable origin and unsaturated fatty acids is associated with lower abdominal adiposity.
